Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements

I like this book “ Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements”  -- a compendium of over 1500 products  in USA & Canada.   It provided profoundly important information on why we need nutrition supplement, what is oxidative stress, the relating risk on imbalanced formulation of  products, and how to choose the best nutrition supplement  from thousands  in the market.

In the past, if I  buy supplements, I would usually rely on the recommendation of the pharmacists or the advertisement in the TV, thinking that the most popular ones would be best ones.  After reading this book, it changed my perspective on the need of nutritional supplement.  Now,  I take the  benchmark as a guideline to choose.


I believe this is the world’s most authoritative book on the subject as it involved the scientific research of the writer Lyle MacWilliam and  12  other renowned  nutritionists / scientists.

As the book is in effect a comparison of products in the market, it can easily be the subject of litigation if the information is biased or misleading.  It is nice to see that it stands the test of time.  The fact that  it is already the 4th edition since the first edition released in 2003 adds credibility.

I particularly like the 3rd edition as all the products in comparison are showing their scores out of a 100 as full mark, in addition to a ranking by the number of stars.

After reading this book, I realize that not all the nutritional supplements are the same. There are big differences between those rank 5 stars and the inferior ones in terms of  potency, uniformity, bioavailability, disintegration and safety ( free from contamination) .

I would highly recommend this book as it would help people make wiser choices on health products.
